Preheat your oven to 425 degrees.
Grease and flour a round cake pan and then set aside.
In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt.
Whisk the dry ingredients together.
Slowly stir in the buttermilk and cut in the butter pieces.
Start mixing the dough together with your hands.
Once all of the buttermilk has been added, turn your dough out on a floured surface and kneed it together a few times, forming it into a ball.
Press the ball into the prepared cake pan and cut an X into the top with a sharp knife, going about 1/4 of an inch deep into the bread.
Cover the pan with the other round cake pan, turned upside down.
Bake for 30 minutes and then remove the top and bake for another 10 minutes or until the crust has darkened to your liking.
Serve immediately.
