When it comes to Fourth of July desserts, what better way to celebrate America than with Dutch Apple Pie Bites?  I mean seriously, you don’t get more Red, White and Blue American than sinking your fork into a huge piece of homemade apple pie and these Dutch Apple Pie Bites are my newest favorite way to celebrate. Homemade apple pie is traditional, it’s homegrown patriotic, it’s delicious … it’s freakin’ apple pie!!!! If you are at a party and you are looking at the Fourth of July dessert table and there is no apple pie … you need to GO! Go now and find a better party because you can’t celebrate the Fourth with no apple pie.  It’s borderline criminal.

So what is so special about these little Dutch Apple Pie Bites?  First, they take the headache out of making a homemade apple pie because you are using pre-made phyllo cups.  Whaaat?? Yes! You know how we all love phyllo dough?  Baklava? Appetizers? Little baby fruit tarts??  Yes!! Guess what??  They make phyllo cups made out of phyllo dough now… (mind blown!)

Another reason I love these little Dutch Apple Pie Bites is that all you need to do to deliver the perfect Fourth of July apple pie dessert, is mix together a few ingredients to make a savory, delicious apple pie filling to fill your little phyllo cups with.  Add a bit of that Dutch apple pie crumble on top and a little drizzle of glaze … oh lawt!!! … these are the best apple pie bites you will ever have.  Trust me, everyone will be begging you for this recipe and you will be amazed at how easy this Fourth of July dessert really is to throw together.

These fun, bite-sized apple pies are the very best part of any celebration but I warn you … These Dutch Apple Pie Bites didn’t last one day in my house.  Not one day.. not even 24 hours .. these Dutch Apple Pie Bites are flaky and tender with just the right amount of phyllo crunch, topped with a quick and easy cinnamon apple pie filling and topped with a delicious streusel crumble and last but not least, drizzled with a light vanilla icing that brings the apple pie bite all together for the 2.3 seconds it takes for you to pop it in your mouth and it disappears forever.

Seriously … it’s embarassing how many of these I destroyed while I was ‘taste testing’ (wink wink) and taking photos.

And the best part is that these Dutch Apple Pie Bites are not just a Fourth of July apple dessert.  These bite-sized apple pies are perfect for all of your fall potlucks and parties and who are we kidding??  Apple pie bites are perfect all year round!!!

WHAT ARE PHYLLO CUPS?

Take your love of phyllo dough and reinvent your entire mindset because phyllo dough now comes in phyllo cups.  And what do you do with phyllo cups?  Let me tell you … you fill those phyllo cups with anything and everything delicious and take the trouble out of your day. The phyllo cups are flaky and buttery and absolutely deliver the best bite of food you will put in your mouth.  Found in the freezer section of most grocery stores, these little cups are a must have when it comes to making Dutch Apple Pie Bites.

WHAT APPLES DO YOU USE FOR APPLE PIE?

I like a mixture of apples when it comes to making homemade apple pie filling.  My favorite apples to use are Honeycrisp apples and Granny Smith apples but you can certainly use Gala, Fiji, Red Delicious and variety of others.  Granny Smith apples are tangy and tart and Honeycrisp apples are firm and sweet and that is my perfect combination of apples when it comes to apple pie filling.

DO YOU SERVE APPLE PIE BITES HOT OR COLD?

Ideally, you want your Dutch Apple Pie Bites served up hot but these are such a great make ahead apple dessert and a must-have at all parties and potlucks, that these apple pie bites are amazing either way.  I tried them hot, I tried them cold.. delicious any way you serve them so don’t worry about trying to keep them hot for guests.  Trust me, hot or cold .. you won’t have leftovers!

CAN I MAKE THESE WITHOUT THE CRUMBLE TOPPING OR GLAZE?

Absolutely!! The Dutch streusel topping along with the icing drizzle is completely optional.  If you want to serve up naked apple pie bites, feel free… they are completely addictive no matter how you serve them.
