There are certain things that I think you should be inherently proud of, special traits that you have been naturally gifted with and that are pieces of what makes you a unique individual. For myself, these things would include my natural blonde hair (#L’Oreal) and most of all, the fact that I was born Irish. I will admit that I am not 100% Irish, I have a few other ethnicity parts swirling around inside of me but Irish is the nationality that suits my personality best and the one that I have embraced wholeheartedly over the years. I survived 13 years of Catholic school, I love Dropkick Murphys, whiskey is my adult beverage of choice, and did I mention I look fabulous in green? See? The stars are all aligned on this one. Now let’s talk about my favorite part .. ‘da food! Most importantly, my very Best Irish Soda Bread Recipe.
If you are going to embrace the Irish heritage, there are certain dishes that you need to learn how to make. Corned beef and cabbage gets the most press on Saint Patrick’s Day but there are a couple of runners-up that are just as delicious. My two favorites are Bangers and Mash and this Best Irish Soda Bread Recipe.
WHAT IS IRISH SODA BREAD?
What is Irish Soda Bread? The Irish Soda Bread Recipe is a very thick, dense bread that will remind you of a biscuit more than anything else. It’s absolutely delicious slathered in butter, fresh out of the oven and because of its crusty exterior and soft center perfect for dunking in Banger Broth. But what I find to be the best part of this Best Irish Soda Bread Recipe is that it is a quick bread. There is no waiting for the Irish Soda Bread to rise. The liquid component used is buttermilk and that works with baking soda so it is not necessary to use yeast, as you would in making traditional loaves of bread.
Does it get any better than this? I think not.
HOW DO I MAKE THE BEST IRISH SODA BREAD RECIPE?
Start by preheating your oven to 425 degrees. Grease and flour a round cake pan. You will need two of these cake pans for the baking process so you might as well grab the other one while you are there. In a large bowl, combine the flour, baking soda and salt. Whisk the dry ingredients together. Slowly stir in the buttermilk and cut in the butter pieces. Start mixing the dough together with your hands.
This is the messy part. Once all of the buttermilk has been added, turn your dough out on a floured surface and kneed it together a few times, forming it into a ball.
Press the ball into the prepared cake pan and cut an X into the top with a sharp knife, going about 1/4 of an inch deep into the bread.
Cover the pan with the other round cake pan, turned upside down. Bake for 30 minutes and then remove the top and bake for another 10 minutes or until the crust has darkened to your liking. Serve immediately.
St. Patrick’s Day should be about family and celebrating life. This is the Best Irish Soda Bread Recipe and it is a wonderful way to bring Irish tradition to your meal on a day that is made to celebrate good food and good times.
