Confess… Go ahead! There’s no judgement here.. I promise, this is a safe place. Most of us have indeed tried the boxed meal that this Homemade Hamburger Helper recipe is inspired by. It’s convenient, it’s a one stop item, it’s (dare I say) an American institution and most of us LOVED it, especially when we were younger… or financially broke like only a 20 year old can be.
I bet we would even find that delightful Hamburger Helper boxed dinner in some of the pantries of you guys reading this blog right now. And why not? It’s affordable, it’s very tasty and it’s easy to feed your family on those nights when you are driving back and forth between ballet recitals and JV football practice.
So why try anything new? Three words … Homemade Hamburger Helper! I’m not suggesting we reinvent the wheel and I am not saying that this recipe is ‘healthier’ or better for you. But what I AM saying is that this Homemade Hamburger Helper recipe lets you have some control over this recipe that you don’t with the prepackaged item (sodium, fat, etc) and I promise you this Homemade Hamburger Helper will hit the table in about the same amount of time and be a thousand times more delicious. I’m not knocking the original… I’m just trying to improve Homemade Hamburger Helper a bit.
WHERE DID HAMBURGER HELPER COME FROM?
Hamburger Helper was introduced in 1971 due to a meat shortage and rising meat prices. Hamburger Helper allowed homemakers to stretch a single pound of hamburger into a meal to feed a family of five.
CAN YOU MAKE HOMEMADE HAMBURGER HELPER WITHOUT MILK?
Milk adds a creamy texture and lends its flavor to the sauce in Homemade Hamburger Helper but you can make the recipe using only water. It will definitely taste different though. You can also substitute the milk by using 1/2 cup evaporated milk plus 1/2 cup water, sour cream and even soy milk.
