If you are looking for the perfect topping to … umm … ANYTHING, this Bourbon Salted Caramel Sauce is IT. Ice cream, dessert hand pies, flip flops .. you name it, this Bourbon Salted Caramel Sauce takes everything to the next level.
I was doing a recipe for a holiday appetizer (coming soon!) and needed a quick caramel sauce to use as a topping. It seemed a bit ordinary, a bit ‘been there, done that’ so then I decided what better way to kick off the holiday season then throw some bourbon in that salted caramel sauce? I mean, how could you improve on a Salted Caramel Sauce recipe that is already sweet and rich and tastes like smooth velvety goodness?
Again … Bourbon.
WHAT IS SALTED CARAMEL?
Salted caramel is the delightful combination of sweet caramel and sea salt. The play of opposite flavors makes salted caramel recipes favorites among those who love the salty / sweet contrast.
BOURBON? BLECK!! DO I NEED TO ADD BOURBON TO THIS SALTED CARAMEL SAUCE RECIPE?
No, if you are not inclined to add bourbon into your salted caramel sauce recipe, please feel free just to leave the bourbon out. This Bourbon Salted Caramel Sauce recipe still makes the perfect salted caramel sauce with or without the bourbon. But if you are so inclined, consider adding that little bit of bourbon into the caramel sauce because, believe me, it makes for a delicious back note on this recipe.
I’M GAME!! HOW DO I MAKE BOURBON SALTED CARAMEL SAUCE?
Easy! Start by making your salted caramel sauce. In a small saucepan over medium high heat, add sugar and stir until sugar is melted. It may clump, just keep whisking and cook until it turns a light amber color. Once sugar is melted, add in butter and whisk caramel sauce until melted. Stir in bourbon. Remove from heat and add in cream and salt and whisk to incorporate. Set aside and let caramel cool. Once cooled, you can pour your Bourbon Salted Caramel Sauce into an air-tight container and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
I have made salted caramel sauces but I have to say that this is my favorite salted caramel saucerecipe to date. It is smooth and beautiful and has just the perfect amount of salt without it being overpowering. Then pour in a splash of bourbon (I use Maker’s Mark) and it is the perfect holiday sauce for topping and dipping your favorite treats.
**Side note: This Bourbon Salted Caramel Sauce is always a lovely gift as the holidays approach :)**
So if you are craving a salty, sweet sauce to compliment your cakes, pies, ice cream sundaes.. etc… etc… etc… please give this Bourbon Salted Caramel Sauce recipe a try. You won’t be disappointed and you will find it is way better than any pre-made jar of caramel topping you might find in your local grocery store.
Happiness and Blessings! ~ Heather
